San Jose Mission at a Distance

I painted  this  landscape on site near Cotulla,  and later at the studio added the San Jose Mission from San Antonio. I wonder what the mission would have looked without streets and buildings that surround then in present day San Antonio TX.

Large Oak by Barn

I think many times I made the assertion specially as a younger person, that I would never paint bluebonnets. ...and here I am painting bluebonnets. I think in my college days we made fun of bluebonnet paintings. Well, at this point, I don't really care what my colleagues think. Now a days
 I find myself studying the elusive dusty color of the foliage in the oaks and admire all those painters that have been able to  capture it. I have been looking at the paintings of great Texas painter Porfirio Salinas

Bread Bakers at Work

This is one of the sketches from a wonderful bakery, Broadway Daily Bread in San Antonio Texas.
The owner Chris, was amazingly generous to allow me to sketch there. I will post the rest of the sketches in the next few days.

Cows Resting

I have witness this scene some many times and I always wanted to paint it. I finally did, and I think it was mostly by mistake or by chance. I actually painted the tree and the background and then I said I think this needs some cows.

San Jose Mission, plein air painting

The weather has been so wonderful here this past few days that I couldn't make anymore excuses to not  go out and paint.  So I decided to go to my favorite place, The San Jose Mission in San Antonio, TX.

This is a painting painted on location from outside the mission compound in San Antonio, with the oak trees in the foreground partially blocking the structure.

Traveling by Bus

 

When I travel by bus to Mexico this images of distant trees stick in my mind.

This is a landscape that I painted with very gentle colors but if you look close there is a lot of exciting things going on. there is an underpainting in red that comes through her and there and the texture is also kind of fun.

I decided to paint three pomegranates again these time in a more dramatic light. I'm  really satisfied with the result. I think I'm going to try something similar in my next painting.

Four Brown Turkey Figs

I like to paint figs,  I ate them as a kid when we would visit an old man who lived in a town called San Jose near El Villar in San Luis Potosi. They bring back wonderful memories

A Battle to The Finish

Blue Sky in Central Texas

This painting is actually one part of a triptych. I do these landscapes and give myself a lot of artistic freedom. In this case it is not a specific location but a place in my mind that remembers driving and looking to the side to see land that extends far into the distance.  Those hills far way could be the Texas Hill country or mountains from my childhood in Mexico. These paintings are about the way the actual paint blends with every color, and also how it interacts with the texture of the canvas.

San Antonio Riverwalk

This is a watercolor of the famous San Antonio landmark the Riverwalk this particular scene is in front of Casa Rio restaurant.

grandpa's T-38 at Randolph AFB

This is a painting I made as a Christmas gift for my children's Grandpa, Tsgt. Frank Orsagh, who was an aircraft mechanic.  He made sure these beauties flew safely in the air by working on them at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas until he retired in August 2002.
